Preliminary evidence has been found linking Awami League, as a party, to crimes committed during last year’s mass uprising. Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam said an investigation is underway on this basis. He made the remarks responding to reporters’ questions at his office on Tuesday.
The chief prosecutor said, “The investigation began precisely because there is preliminary evidence of the party’s involvement. Our investigation team is at work. Preliminary linkage certainly exists. Completing the investigation is only a matter of time.”
Asked what this preliminary linkage involves, he said, “There is the party’s institutional involvement in the July uprising. There is individual liability. There is superior liability. Our investigation is proceeding on these fronts.”
Earlier on Sunday, the chief prosecutor had said the agency is investigating whether Awami League will be tried as an organization. “If, after investigation, preliminary allegations are found against Awami League as an organization, and a report is submitted to me, I have the opportunity, as chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, to take the necessary steps upon receiving that report. For now, our investigation on this matter is ongoing,” he said.
During the interim government’s tenure, the Nationalist Democratic Movement (NDM) had brought allegations of crimes against humanity against Awami League as a political party.
