Ukraine struck the Russian capital, Moscow, overnight with more than 500 drones, in what state news agency TASS on Sunday (May 17) described as the largest assault on the city in more than a year, citing local and military officials.

At least three people were killed and many more wounded, TASS said.

Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said a woman died when a drone hit a house in Khimki, northwest of Moscow, in the early hours of Sunday, and another person was trapped under the rubble. Two more people were killed by falling debris in Mytishchi, northeast of the city, he said, adding that 12 people were wounded across Moscow.

Russia’s defence ministry said 556 Ukrainian drones were shot down overnight. Sobyanin said 120 of those had been heading directly for Moscow.

Drone debris set a house ablaze in the village of Subotino, burning four people, TASS reported, while several buildings were damaged in the town of Istra.

Parts of a drone also landed on the grounds of Sheremetyevo, Russia’s busiest airport, though no casualties or damage were reported there. Separately, Russian air-defence officials said Russia launched 287 drones overnight, wounding at least nine people.
