Three bodies have been reported lying in remote hills in Hnila union of Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar. Law enforcement agencies are trying to recover them. A joint forces operation in the hills has continued since a soldier was killed there.
Police found the bodies on Friday afternoon in hills east of Nayapara and the Leda camp in Hnila union.
Cox’s Bazar Superintendent of Police ANM Sajedur Rahman confirmed that they had received word of three bodies in the hills. Efforts to recover them are under way, and law enforcement operations are continuing at the scene, he said.
On Thursday afternoon a joint forces raid on a hideout of armed human traffickers in the same hills led to an exchange of fire. Soldier Md Titas Sheikh, 27, was killed by the traffickers’ gunfire. The joint forces rescued 56 people and detained six members of the trafficking ring. Those rescued were handed over to Teknaf Model Police Station on Friday morning.
News of the three bodies has caused fresh alarm among local people. Residents have demanded a sweeping operation across the hills to wipe out the armed criminals’ hideouts.
Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer SM Anik Chowdhury said law enforcement agencies were working to arrest the armed traffickers hiding in the hills. “No one who commits a crime will get away with it. We are also keeping track of the human chain,” he said.
“We are deeply saddened and grieved that a soldier on duty was killed by the gunfire of armed human traffickers,” he said. “Rooting out crimes like this needs the joint cooperation of local people as well as law enforcement.”
