Opposition leader and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami ameer Shafiqur Rahman has said it would have been better if Ishraque Hossain had not had a weapon in his hand, speaking about Ishraque’s resignation as state minister.
He made the comment on Tuesday in reply to journalists’ questions during a visit to Chattogram.
Ishraque Hossain resigned on Monday as state minister for liberation war affairs, on the prime minister’s instruction, amid controversy and criticism after he displayed a weapon in his own hand during an anti-drug drive in Old Dhaka. The opposition leader responded to the government’s step and to Ishraque’s conduct.
“Drugs are destroying society and the body. In that situation Ishraque did what needed to be done. Police and members of other forces were also present on that drive. It would have been better if he had not had the weapon in his hand, that much. Nobody can call his work negative. He may well have done it with good intentions. But there is no shortage of people in this society who would apply it with bad intentions, and they use this as a reference. Still, there is nothing to object to about his work,” the opposition leader said.
A good purpose does not make the method acceptable in every case, he said. Such matters need to be considered from the standpoint of civic conduct.
Setting out Jamaat’s position on drugs, the opposition leader said a narcotics control law had been passed in parliament, but its aim was not limited to controlling drugs: it wanted to eradicate them. Alongside legislation to stop the spread of drugs, he stressed the need for practical and effective measures.
