Russia has carried out an air strike on the Northern Bridge over the Dnipro river in Kyiv, the latest in a series of attacks on Ukraine’s infrastructure, causing widespread traffic chaos in the capital.

The bridge was hit on Saturday (3 October) after a drone attack warning, a day after the Southern Bridge was struck. City officials said the attacks were “tearing Kyiv apart”.

The long war that began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022 has been fought mainly on the ground in the east, and Kyiv has so far suffered less damage than areas near the front line.

“The Northern Bridge has been hit,” Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram on Saturday, adding that emergency services were on their way. In a later update he said the bridge’s roadway and the trolleybus power lines had been damaged and that traffic across the bridge had been stopped.

Several bridges over the Dnipro, which link the eastern and western parts of Kyiv, have been attacked before.
