SYLHET — A 25-year-old Bangladeshi man was shot dead by Indian Khasia tribesmen near the Dona border in Sylhet’s Kanaighat upazila on Sunday, residents said.

The victim, Shakil Ahmad, son of Abdur Rouf of Patichhara village, was killed around 4 p.m. on Oct. 26 about 300 yards inside Indian territory near border pillar 1334, residents said.

Residents said Shakil and two others crossed the Dona border illegally on Sunday afternoon to gather betel nuts inside the Dona Khasia settlement in India’s Meghalaya state. Armed Khasia tribesmen opened fire on the group, hitting Shakil.

His companions carried the wounded man back into Bangladesh. He died en route to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital, where he was being taken in critical condition, residents said.
