NOAKHALI — An Awami League leader named Kamal Uddin Majumder hanged himself at his home in Senbag, Noakhali, under the pressure of loans.

Police recovered his body at about 12:15 p.m. Tuesday.

He took his own life late Monday at his home in the Ludhua Dighir Par area of Ward 1 in the Kesharpar union of the upazila.

Majumder was a resident of the Ludhua Dighir Par area of Ward 1 in the Kesharpar union and served as the Awami League president of the same ward.

Alek Hossain, the Ward 1 union council member of Kesharpar, said Majumder hanged himself under the pressure of debt. He was the current ward Awami League president, and his suicide note mentioned the debts, Hossain said.

Kesharpar union Awami League President Mohammad Belal Bhuiyan said: “I went to the scene on hearing the news. He had no one else to take care of his family. The family lived on his earnings. He took his own life under the pressure of debt.”

Senbag police station Sub-Inspector Zakir Hossain confirmed the incident and said Kamal Majumder was a farmer by profession and the ward Awami League president. He hanged himself with a rope tied to a jackfruit tree in front of his house late Monday, without the knowledge of family members, Hossain said.

He said a six-page note was found in the possession of his relatives at the time the body was recovered. The note cited the pressure of debt and financial hardship as the reasons for his death. Whether the note is in the deceased farmer’s own handwriting will be examined, Hossain said. He was due to repay more than 1 lakh taka (about $830) of loans that day.

The sub-inspector said police prepared an inquest report at the scene after being informed. The body was then sent to the Noakhali General Hospital morgue for an autopsy. An unnatural death case will be filed over the incident, he said.
