GAZIPUR — Corruption is the biggest enemy of any state, Home Adviser Lt. Gen. (retired) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said. It does not just damage the economy; it erodes state institutions from within and breaks public trust. In the same way, if any prison official acts out of self-interest, greed or political advantage, that person is not merely breaking the law. He weakens the foundation of the state and the rule of law.
He made the remarks Tuesday morning, Jan. 27, after the closing parade of basic training for the 63rd batch of female prison guards at the parade ground of Kashimpur jail.
The home adviser also said prison personnel are not the protectors of any vested interest. They are government employees paid with public money, and serving the public is their sole duty. “You are not anyone’s private employees. You are paid employees of the government. Public welfare is your only job. I wish all graduates of the 63rd batch of female prison guards’ basic training course success in their future lives.”
Also present at the ceremony were Inspector General of Prisons Brig. Gen. Syed Motaher Hossain, Additional Inspector General of Prisons Col. Mohammad Mustafa Kamal, Col. Tanveer Hossain, Col. Mesbahul Alam Selim, Jahangir Kabir and Tipu Sultan, commandant of the training center, along with the Gazipur police commissioner, deputy commissioner, district administrator, superintendent of police and other senior government officials.
Earlier in the morning, the home adviser attended as chief guest at Kashimpur High Security Central Jail. The closing parade then began at the parade ground with armed salutes from the trainees. Newly trained guards performed slow and quick marches around the parade ground to the rhythm of a band and demonstrated physical fitness, discipline and teamwork through various drills and an unarmed self-defense display. After the parade, prizes were given to top performers across six categories: PT, drill, firing, unarmed combat, written examination and overall excellence.
