SHERPUR — Bangladesh Nationalist Party rebel candidate Aminul Islam Badsha has formally withdrawn his nomination paper from the Sherpur-3 (Sribardi-Jhenaigati) byelection, the district returning officer said Thursday.

District Returning Officer and District Election Officer Mohammad Jahangir Hossain confirmed the development at midday Thursday, March 12. The byelection had been ordered after the death of the Jamaat-e-Islami nominee.

Badsha submitted his application to withdraw on Tuesday, March 10. With his exit, four valid candidates remain in the race, including the single nominees of the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami.

The valid candidates are BNP nominee and former lawmaker Md. Mahmudul Haque Rubel, Jamaat-e-Islami nominee Md. Masudur Rahman Masud, Islami Andolan Bangladesh nominee Abu Taleb Md. Saifuddin and Bangladesh Samajtantrik Andolan (Marxist) nominee Md. Mizanur Rahman. Election symbols will be allocated to the contestants on March 15, after which campaigning will begin.

Earlier, BNP leader Aminul Islam Badsha had stepped aside in favor of BNP nominee Mahmudul Haque Rubel. The central BNP withdrew Badsha’s expulsion order on March 9.

Jahangir Hossain said candidates will be able to start campaigning after the March 15 symbol allocation. He said the district election office has completed all preparations for a free, fair and impartial vote.
