PANCHAGARH — The Bangladesh Nationalist Party has opened the national parliament in violation of the July charter, the National Citizen Party’s chief organizer for the northern region, Sarjis Alam, said Thursday.
“If the BNP thinks it can ignore the July charter, go against the people and still survive in politics and run parliament normally, that is not possible,” Alam said. “If any party tries to push its own party interests and walk the path of autocracy, the people and we, the opposition, will resist together.”
He said the NCP demanded the impeachment of the president in the first session of parliament because the new government cannot operate under this president.
Alam spoke to reporters Thursday afternoon at the open stage of the Panchagarh government auditorium grounds, after a Kishore Kantha Foundation prize ceremony for winners of a merit scholarship examination.
He said the BNP has not sent a good message to the people of Bangladesh going forward. Under the July charter implementation framework, the speaker was to come from the ruling party but the deputy speaker from the opposition, he said. Instead, the post of deputy speaker has been given to BNP-backed lawmaker Barrister Kaisar Kamal.
