KISHOREGANJ — Junior Minister for Jute and Textiles Mohammad Shariful Alam said canal-digging programs are aimed at restoring natural water flow by reconnecting canals with rivers and wetlands, not at public display.

Alam spoke Monday, March 16, at the inauguration of the Aribil canal excavation program in Kishoreganj’s Nikli upazila.

“This is not a token program or a public-display effort,” the junior minister said. “Our goal is to genuinely create an environment that supports farming, fisheries and food production for local people through canal digging.”

He said that although canal land is government property in many areas, local farmers had been temporarily growing crops on it because of the lack of water. The government would also take care to ensure that farmers’ interests were not harmed during the excavation, he said.

The event was organized by the Water Development Board. Special guests included Mazharul Islam, member of parliament for Kishoreganj-1; Advocate Jalal Uddin, MP for Kishoreganj-2; and Sheikh Mojibur Rahman Iqbal, MP for Kishoreganj-5.

District Commissioner Mohammad Aslam Molla, Police Superintendent Dr. S.M. Farhad, Water Development Board executive engineer Mohammad Sajjad Hossain, district and upazila officials, leaders of BNP affiliates and local residents also attended.
