WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump has proposed a $152 million budget to reopen the notorious Alcatraz prison. The plan is part of his proposed fiscal 2027 budget.

The prison, located near the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, is also known as “The Rock.” It was once considered one of the most fearsome and notorious prisons in the United States. Several California politicians have expressed skepticism about Trump’s proposed budget. They have raised questions about the final cost of reopening the prison and the challenges of running Alcatraz as an active facility.

The prison was closed in 1963. It currently operates as a tourist attraction and is managed by the National Park Service.
