DHAKA — State resources, broadly understood, are assets directly controlled and owned by the government. These include government offices, roads, culverts, bridges, rivers, canals, water bodies, public educational institutions, defense forces, law enforcement agencies, courts and similar institutions and their facilities.
Large amounts of tax are collected from ordinary people based on their incomes to finance national development. The government allocates that money across various sectors for the country’s development. But when those funds are not properly used, development is constantly hindered. Significant waste is often seen in government development projects.
The overall development of every country and nation depends on the equitable distribution and proper use of state resources. Protecting state resources is therefore the duty of every citizen, because these assets are held in trust for the people. Among state resources, electricity is wasted the most. Excessive use of electricity is one of the main causes of load shedding. Such waste is especially visible in government institutions, where lights, fans, air conditioners and other heavy electrical equipment are often used more than needed.
Lavish lighting at social functions also accounts for excessive electricity waste. In addition, illegal electrical connections cost the government crores of taka in lost revenue every year. After electricity comes the waste of gas. In urban areas, some households keep stoves burning longer than necessary, wasting a large share of the gas supply.
Damaging state resources is a punishable offense. Just as the state is responsible for the security of its citizens, citizens are responsible for safeguarding state resources. The government alone cannot protect national assets, so every individual must use them responsibly. People should use power-saving appliances and limit the use of lights, fans and air conditioners during the day. They should also avoid using more cooking gas than necessary. Restraint in the use of state resources is essential, and everyone must do their part. Only then can the waste of national resources be prevented.
