DHAKA — Demonstrators identifying themselves as July uprising fighters blocked the Shahbagh intersection in the capital Thursday morning, demanding a July national charter.

They began the road blockade and protest around 11 a.m., halting traffic. Police were on high alert. The protesters had gathered at Shahbagh since early morning.

Meanwhile, the National Consensus Commission is aiming to finalize the July charter by Thursday after wrapping up the second phase of talks. The commission’s discussions with political parties to build consensus have not yet concluded.

Jamaat-e-Islami, the National Citizen Party (NCP) and Islami Andolan Bangladesh have raised objections to the draft of the July national charter. The parties said the charter must be brought under a legal framework with a guaranteed path to implementation, or the entire reform process would be thrown into uncertainty. The BNP has broadly agreed with the draft.
