DHAKA — Bangladesh’s Primary and Mass Education Ministry has asked the Public Service Commission to recruit candidates for 2,382 vacant head-teacher posts at government primary schools, officials said.

The ministry has written to the Public Service Commission (PSC) outlining the recruitment demand for directly appointable head-teacher posts, officials said.

S.M. Matiur Rahman, public relations officer at the PSC, confirmed the ministry’s letter.

The ministry had earlier submitted to the PSC its demand for 2,382 directly appointable posts.

An additional 31,459 posts that have been held up because of litigation will be filled through promotion as soon as the cases are resolved, the ministry said.

According to the Directorate of Primary Education, Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus instructed officials at a July 14 meeting at the state guest house Jamuna to fill the vacant head-teacher posts as quickly as possible.

Bidhan Ranjan Roy Poddar, adviser to the ministry; Siraj Uddin Mia, principal secretary to the chief adviser; and Abu Taher Md. Masud Rana, secretary of the ministry, were among those present at the meeting.

The chief adviser directed officials to coordinate with the PSC and complete the head-teacher recruitment process by issuing a circular as quickly as possible.

Following that directive, the ministry sent the recruitment demand to the PSC.

The country has 65,569 government primary schools, with 65,502 approved head-teacher posts. About 31,396 head teachers are currently working, leaving 34,106 posts vacant, according to ministry sources.

Of those, 2,647 posts are directly appointable. After setting aside 10 percent as reserved, the remaining 2,382 will be filled through direct recruitment.

The PSC will soon publish a recruitment notice for these posts, officials said.

The promotion process for 31,459 posts — moving assistant teachers up to head teacher — will begin as soon as a gradation-related lawsuit involving nationalized teachers is resolved.
