DHAKA — Banks across Bangladesh will be closed Tuesday, Aug. 5. Bangladesh Bank has directed all scheduled banks in the country to close because the government has designated the day as July Uprising Day, a public holiday.

Bangladesh Bank’s Department of Off-Site Supervision issued a notice to that effect on Thursday, July 17.

Under a July 2 notification from the Cabinet Division of the Bangladesh government, Aug. 5 has been designated as July Uprising Day. As with all government offices and courts, scheduled banks are included in the holiday.

Bangladesh Bank’s notice said all scheduled banks in the country will be closed on Aug. 5 as a public holiday. It urged all parties to make advance preparations and to plan their financial transactions accordingly. Aug. 5, 2024, marked a new chapter in Bangladesh’s history. After years of repression, vote-rigging, looting and authoritarian rule, the Awami League was ousted from power. Sheikh Hasina, who had clung to state power for more than a decade, was forced to flee. The people prevailed, and the door to the restoration of democracy in Bangladesh was opened.

Separately, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) said in a notice Saturday, Aug. 2, that all garment factories will close Aug. 5 to mark July Uprising Day.
