DHAKA — Shafiqul Islam Apu, the Awami League’s Jhenaidah district president and a former member of Parliament, has been arrested.
Detectives from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested him at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday at his home in the capital’s Dhanmondi area, officials said. Apu faces three cases.
According to Jhenaidah district police, Apu had been on the run since Aug. 5, 2024. He faces at least three cases, including for the vandalism and arson of the Jhenaidah district BNP office and for the vandalism and arson of the home of district BNP President Advocate M.A. Majid.
He is also an accused in a case filed over an attack on protesting students and members of the public in Jhenaidah on Aug. 4 of last year. Acting on intelligence in those cases, police arrested the former lawmaker. He is being brought to Jhenaidah for questioning.
Abdullah Al Mamun, officer-in-charge of Jhenaidah Sadar police station, confirmed the information. “Apu was arrested at a house in Dhaka. He is being brought to Jhenaidah. There are multiple cases against him,” he said.
