CHOUGACHHA, Bangladesh — Jamaat-e-Islami has worked since its founding to build a society free of hunger, poverty and inequality, the party’s nominated candidate for Jashore-2 said Saturday.
“In keeping with that, we are working for the people of Chougachha and Jhikargacha with our limited resources. We are trying to organize free medical camps, road repairs and other welfare work for the people of the two upazilas. If anyone is even minimally helped, we consider our labor worthwhile,” Dr. Mosleh Uddin Farid said.
Farid was speaking as chief guest at a workers’ rally of Narayanpur union Jamaat in Chougachha upazila on Saturday, Aug. 30.
The welfare and liberation of humanity is Jamaat’s political philosophy, Farid said, adding that the responsibility for relieving citizens’ hardships rested with the state. But because a welfare state has not been established in Bangladesh, people are deprived of state welfare, he said. Individuals and organizations cannot fill that gap, he said, but Jamaat was trying to help the distressed within its limited means.
If an Islamic welfare state were established, all problems would be solved at the state level and people would not have to stand in line to beg for help, Farid said. He called on all to unite under Jamaat’s banner to build such a society.
Jamaat is a mass-oriented and principled political organization, Farid said, working to establish good governance and guarantee people’s rights. He said the party seeks to build a society without distinctions of class, wealth, caste, religion or color, where the basic rights granted by Islam are protected for all, regardless of religion, profession, gender or age.
The rally was presided over by Sulaiman Hossain, ameer of the union Jamaat, and conducted by union secretary Master Touhidul Islam.
Other speakers included Maulana Golam Morshed, ameer of the upazila Jamaat; Maulana Nurul Islam, naib-e-ameer; Nuruzzaman, secretary; Kamal Ahmed, assistant secretary; Maulana Gias Uddin; and Tunihinur Rahman, the union chairman candidate and a leader of the upazila labor wing.
