SAVAR — Voting in the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) and hall union elections has ended. Voting began Thursday, Sept. 11, at 8 a.m. and continued until 5 p.m. After voting ended, ballot boxes from 21 halls were brought to the university’s senate hall, where counting is now under way.

On the election results, the election commission said returning officers and assistant officers are on duty at each center for vote counting. Preliminary results may be announced within a few hours, it said. Security has already been tightened, with at least 1,500 members of law-enforcement agencies on duty at key points on campus.

Total voters in this JUCSU election number 11,919. Among the male halls: Al Beruni Hall has 210 voters, AFM Kamaluddin Hall has 333, Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall has 464, Shaheed Salam-Barkat Hall has 298, Maulana Bhasani Hall has 514, Hall No. 10 has 522, Shaheed Rafique-Jabbar Hall has 650, Vishwakavi Rabindranath Tagore Hall has 350, Hall No. 21 has 735, National Poet Nazrul Hall has 992 and Tajuddin Ahmed Hall has 947.

Among the women’s halls: Nawab Faizunnesa Hall has 279, Jahanara Imam Hall has 367, Pritilata Hall has 396, Begum Khaleda Zia Hall has 403, Sufia Kamal Hall has 456, Female Hall No. 13 has 519, Female Hall No. 15 has 571, Rokeya Hall has 956, Fazilatunnesa Hall has 798 and Taramon Bibi Hall has 983.

In this election, 178 candidates contested for 25 posts. Eight panels backed by leftists, Shibir, Chhatra Dal and independent students participated. However, the Chhatra Dal-backed panel boycotted the election, alleging vote rigging.

Tanjila Hossain Baishakhi, the Chhatra Dal-backed GS candidate, announced the boycott at a news conference Thursday afternoon at the guest room of Maulana Bhasani Hall. Subsequently, Samprity-r Oikya, Sangshaptak Parishad and Swatantra Angikar Parishad also announced their boycott. Five independent candidates also withdrew at one point.
