DHAKA — National Consensus Commission Vice Chair Prof. Ali Riaz said clause 5 of the pledge in the July National Charter 2025 had been amended after consultations with July fighters and political parties.
He said the necessary urgent amendments had been made to reflect the demands of the July fighters. Riaz made the remarks Friday at the South Plaza of Parliament addressing protesting July fighters.
Riaz then read out the amended text of clause 5.
The clause says the state will ensure trial of all killings carried out by certain members of the fascist Awami League and its allied law-enforcement forces during the July-August 2024 mass uprising, as well as of those who were forcibly disappeared, killed or tortured during the 16-year democratic struggle against Awami fascism that preceded the uprising. It also pledges state honors for the martyrs, appropriate support for the martyrs’ families and for the wounded July fighters — including monthly stipends, medical care and rehabilitation — and legal indemnity, protection of fundamental rights and security for the families of the martyrs and for the wounded fighters.
The commission vice chair said the commission would present the implementation of this pledge to the government clearly and specifically. He said there was no difference of opinion between the political parties and the consensus commission on the matter.
Also present were commission members Justice Md. Emdadul Haque, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar and Dr. Md. Ayub Mia, along with Munir Haider, special assistant to the chief adviser, who is involved in the consensus-building process.
