LAKSHMIPUR — About 50 leaders and supporters of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) joined Jamaat-e-Islami in Lakshmipur on Friday night, led by BNP figure Hossain Ahmed. The ceremony was held in the Nabiganj Bazar area of Chararuhita Union in Sadar upazila.

Hossain Ahmed was a member of the BNP’s Ward No. 5 unit in Chararuhita Union and had served as its former organizing secretary.

The amir of the Chararuhita Union Jamaat-e-Islami, Omar Faruk, and the Ward No. 5 unit member Shafiqul Islam were among the local Jamaat leaders present at the ceremony.

“Hossain Ahmed has joined Jamaat with around 50 workers and supporters,” Faruk said.

Hossain Ahmed, the new member, said: “Even after Sheikh Hasina’s fall, I continued with the BNP. Later I understood that the BNP has no connection with Islamic ideology. As a Muslim, I joined Jamaat to help establish Islam.”
