BRAHMANBARIA — At least 30 people were injured on both sides in a clash between residents of Chhoto Deowanpara and Hawlapara villages in Sarail upazila on Friday night, sparked by an earlier altercation over bathing in a pond, residents said.
According to local accounts, Taim and several of his friends from Hawlapara village went to bathe in a pond in Chhoto Deowanpara village in the afternoon. During the visit, Shakil, Shipon and others from Chhoto Deowanpara assaulted the young men from Hawlapara. After nightfall, residents of the two villages, armed with locally made weapons, spears and arrows, became involved in a clash. They used torch lights as they attacked one another. The area turned into a battleground as the two sides chased one another and threw bricks and stones.
Sarail Upazila Executive Officer Mosharraf Hossain said law enforcement reached the scene after receiving word and spent more than an hour bringing the clash under control. Police have been deployed in the area to prevent further fighting.
