SHARIATPUR — Police arrested two leaders of a district trade union for truck, tank-lorry and covered-van drivers on charges of stopping trucks and extorting money on the Shariatpur-Madaripur regional road, officials said.
The two were detained Monday afternoon from the Angaria bypass area on the Shariatpur-Madaripur regional road.
The arrested men are Abdur Rashid Howlader, general secretary of the Shariatpur District Truck, Tank-Lorry and Covered-Van Drivers’ Trade Union, and Narayan Poddar, a member of the same organization.
According to police and local sources, an organized group of 10 to 12 people had been using the union’s name to stop trucks and collect 500 taka from each truck in the Angaria bypass area since Monday morning. When local residents noticed, they asked the group to show authorization for the collection. Tension grew when no permit could be produced. A team from the Angaria police outpost later reached the scene and detained the two men. Receipts and cash collected during the extortion were also seized.
Sub-inspector Motiur Rahman of the Angaria police outpost confirmed the incident.
