SATKHIRA — A 52-year-old farmer in Shyamnagar upazila was electrocuted by an electric trap he had set in his vegetable plot to ward off rats, neighbors and a local official said.

Rathindranath Raptan of Jelekhali village leased land along the embankment of a fish enclosure and grew vegetables there. To stop rats from damaging the crop, he laid an electric trap around the plot. He was killed by that trap, officials said.

The incident occurred about 7 p.m. Thursday in Jelekhali village, they said.

Neighbor Harshit Raptan said Rathindranath grew various vegetables on the embankment of an enclosure in front of his house. After noticing a rat infestation, he set up the electric trap. He left home Thursday afternoon and did not return. When he had still not come back after dark, his wife went to look for him. After searching, she found his body in the water of the enclosure. The body was later recovered.

Local Union Parishad member Debashish Gayen confirmed the death and said Rathindranath’s last rites were held at the local cremation ground Friday morning.
