BAGERHAT — A 48-year-old man was beaten to death by his cousins in Morrelganj upazila of Bagerhat on Sunday night in a dispute over land, police and local residents said.
The victim, Md. Kalam Khan, was the son of Wajed Ali Khan of Dhepuarpar village in Chingrikhali union. The attack took place at the Chhoto Jamua area of the union at about 9 p.m. The attackers labeled Kalam a thief before beating him, police said.
Police and local residents said Kalam had been in a long-running land dispute with Sohel Khan, a member of the same extended family. The matter had reached the courts.
On Sunday evening, as Kalam was returning home from the local market, Sohel Khan and several others seized him and his elder brother, Lutfor Khan, and accused them of theft. They beat both men with hammers and sticks. After Kalam fell unconscious, the attackers dragged him to the road and turned him over to police.
Police took the brothers to the Morrelganj upazila health complex, where a doctor on duty declared Kalam dead. Lutfor’s condition was critical, and he was sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital later the same night for more advanced treatment.
The superintendent of police of Bagerhat confirmed the incident and said police have begun operations to arrest the accused. “No one will be spared,” the officer said.
