CHATTOGRAM — Jamaat-e-Islami expressed deep concern and strongly condemned a shooting attack on Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) candidate Ershad Ullah during a campaign event in Chattogram that left him critically wounded, killed one person and injured several others.
Principal Muhammad Nurul Amin, a member of the central majlis-e-shura of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Chattogram metropolitan secretary and the party’s candidate for Chattogram-2 (Fatikchhari), made the statement. Ershad Ullah is convener of Chattogram metropolitan BNP and a BNP candidate for the Chattogram-8 seat.
“Such terrorist activity poses a severe threat to political culture and democratic practice,” Nurul Amin said in the statement. “When terrorists publicly cause such loss of life, it terrifies the entire country’s political environment. I strongly condemn this heinous incident and pray for the quick recovery of Mr. Ershad Ullah.”
Nurul Amin said such incidents, if they continue, will destroy the country’s democratic system. “It is the responsibility of the state to stop political violence, identify armed terrorists and bring them under exemplary punishment,” he said.
He called on the administration and law enforcement to investigate impartially, bring the actual offenders under the law, and take effective measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
