RAOZAN, Chattogram — Five leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its affiliated groups were wounded in a shooting in Raozan upazila of Chattogram district, with one in critical condition, police said, as gun violence continued in the area within hours.
The shooting happened around 11:45 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, at Kuiyapara Chowdhury Para in Bagowan Union of the upazila.
Those wounded are Abdullah Suman, general secretary of Raozan upazila Sramik Dal; Mohammad Ismail, vice president of Bagowan Union Krishak Dal; Khorshed Alam Chowdhury, joint convener of Bagowan Union Sramik Dal; Rabiul Hossain Rubel, vice president of Bagowan Union Jubo Dal; and Mohammad Sohel, a BNP activist. All are residents of the same union.
Suman was shot in the chest and is in critical condition, sources said. Four of the wounded have been admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
According to local residents, the leaders were returning home after a preparatory meeting for the historic Revolution and Solidarity Day on Nov. 7, when seven or eight people opened fire suddenly. The attack was led by Istiaque Chowdhury Avi, general secretary of Raozan upazila Jubo Dal — also known as “terrorist Avyar” — along with Altaf Chowdhury Tutul and Joni Chowdhury, locals said.
The attackers fled in a car after firing the shots, residents said.
Md. Belayet Hossain, assistant superintendent of police for the Raozan-Rangunia circle, said: “We visited the scene after receiving the news but did not find anyone. We are currently conducting operations. We are trying to find out why this incident happened. Efforts are under way to arrest those involved.”
Earlier in the evening, Ershad Ullah, BNP’s metropolitan convener and the party’s candidate for the Chattogram-8 (Boalkhali) seat, was wounded by gunfire from gunmen during a campaign event at Chaillatali in the East Bayezid area of Chattogram city. Sarowar Hossain, alias Babla, 43, who had been taking part in the campaign, was killed in the same shooting.
