DHAKA — Today is significant not only for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) but also for ordinary people across the country, the party’s secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, said Friday. He said the spirit of Nov. 7 teaches that democracy cannot endure without securing the rights of the people.
Fakhrul said various conspiracies have continued since the mass uprising in Bangladesh, and that attempts were again being made to destroy democracy.
Against that backdrop, he said, National Revolution and Solidarity Day on Nov. 7 inspires the country toward establishing a truly democratic state.
The BNP organized the observance at the mazar of party founder and former President Ziaur Rahman at Jia Udyan in the capital on Friday morning. Floral tributes, prayers and a special invocation were offered between 10:20 a.m. and 10:50 a.m.
Speaking to reporters afterward, Fakhrul said Nov. 7 is important for people in the most remote parts of the country, not just party supporters. He said the day’s spirit teaches that democracy cannot survive without enforcing the right of the people.
He said Bangladesh and the BNP would move forward with the goal of restoring the people’s right to vote.
Asked about a phone call he received the previous day from the acting Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami, Fakhrul said his party’s standing committee had communicated its decision at a meeting the day before. “That is our position,” he said.
Standing committee members Mirza Abbas, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan and Salahuddin Ahmed; Prof. Dr. A.Z.M. Zahid Hossain; adviser to the chairperson Amaan Ullah Aman; senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi; joint secretaries general Khairul Kabir Khokon and Abdus Salam Azad; and Dhaka south city BNP convener Rafiqul Alam Majnu took part in the program along with other leaders.
