DHAKA — The interim government has not decided to withdraw 50 percent of the Bangladesh Army personnel deployed for law-and-order duties, Home Adviser Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said Sunday.

The adviser made the statement in response to a question from reporters after a meeting of the core committee on law and order in the home ministry’s conference room at the Secretariat on Sunday afternoon.

“Fifty percent of the army personnel deployed for law-and-order duties are not being withdrawn from the field. What has been circulated about this is a rumor; no such decision has been taken,” he said.

Chowdhury also said the government was not alarmed by the Awami League’s planned lockdown or shutdown programs.
