DHAKA — There will be no election in 2026 without a legal basis for the July charter, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami chief Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said Tuesday.
He made the remarks at a rally called by eight parties, including Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Andolan Bangladesh, at Paltan in the capital.
“To recognize the July uprising, the July charter must be given a legal basis,” Shafiqur Rahman said. “Without that legal basis, there is no possibility of any election.”
“The pro-liberation people of the country have only one demand: a referendum must be held before the national parliamentary election,” he said. “All parties agree on the referendum. So why this bargaining over the date?”
The rally was organized by eight like-minded political parties running a joint program on a five-point demand that included a constitutional order to implement the July national charter, a referendum to be held in November and a level playing field for all in the election.
The parties are Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis, Khelafat Majlis, Nezam-e-Islam Party, Bangladesh Khelafat Andolan, Bangladesh Development Party and Jatiya Ganatantrik Party.
