SIRAJGANJ — Marine police arrested 10 men caught extorting money from a sand-laden bulkhead on the Jamuna River in Chouhali upazila of Sirajganj. Chouhali police station will send them to court Saturday on extortion charges.
Those arrested are: Al Amin, 24, son of Mizanur; Md. Nazrul Islam, 45, son of A. Khalifa; Union Parishad member Md. Manik Sikder, son of the late Latif Sikder; Md. Shahidul Islam, 35, son of Abul Hossain Sikder; Abdul Alim, 40, son of Abdul Hamid; Shariful Islam, 35, son of the late Amod Ali; Jahangir Hossain, 35, son of Soleman Sikder; Yunus Ali, 26, son of Yusuf Ali; Md. Shahidul Islam, 45, son of the late Santosh Ali; and Farid Hossain, 26, son of Makbul Hossain. All are residents of Rehai Kaulia village in Ghorjan union of the upazila. They were detained Saturday morning, Nov. 15, in the upstream section of the Jamuna River near Rehai Kaulia Muradpur in Ghorjan union. Helal Uddin Mondal, the victim, later filed a case naming them along with several unidentified suspects.
Chouhali police station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Barik confirmed the details. He said one person had filed a case alleging extortion involving his bulkhead, and preparations were under way to send the accused to court.
Hundreds of bulkheads carry sand daily from leased sand quarries on the Jamuna River in Sirajganj to various parts of the country via waterways, and a group has been extorting money daily from these sand-carrying bulkheads, according to information gathered.
Chouhali marine police inspector Firoz Ahmed said the suspects were caught red-handed while extorting money from a sand-loaded bulkhead on the river. An engine-powered boat, 2,000 taka in cash and 10 mobile phones were recovered from them. Preparations are under way to file an extortion case, he said.
