Earthquake panic at Tongi garment factory injures over 200 workers

TONGI — More than 200 workers were injured in a stampede at the Fashion Pulse Limited garment factory in the BSCIC area of Tongi, Gazipur, when an earthquake struck Friday morning. The tremor began around 10:39 a.m., and workers were hurt as they rushed to evacuate the building. The injured were taken to Tongi Government Hospital.

Factory workers said about 3,000 employees were working in the nine-story building when the earthquake hit. As workers scrambled to evacuate, at least 200 were injured, including Arman, 17, Khokon, 17, Sharmin, 24, Amena, 30, Jahura, 32, Krishna, 33, Jannat, 18, Rani, 35, Akash, 15, Kalpana, 39, Sabina, 30, Sima, 40, and Rahima, 25. Sharmin, who was seriously injured, was transferred to Dhaka Medical. Factory officials declined to speak to the media.

Dr. Ishrat Jahan Anny and Dr. Tarekur Rahman, emergency physicians at Tongi Government Hospital, said the workers were injured during the rush to evacuate.

Mohammad Oahiduzzaman, officer-in-charge of Tongi East Police Station, said the workers were injured when they panicked and tried to flee during the earthquake. The law-and-order situation in the area remains normal.
