JHALOKATI, Bangladesh — Jamaat-e-Islami chief Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said Saturday that the next general election would write a new chapter in Bangladesh’s history, and warned that any attempt at vote rigging would be met with a fitting response.

Shafiqur Rahman was speaking at the national representatives’ conference of Muslihin at Nesarabad madrasa grounds in Jhalokati at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22.

“If anyone tries to engineer the vote or seize polling centers as in the past, they will get a fitting response,” he said.

The Jamaat chief said his party’s fight against all oppression, fascism and attempts to divide the nation would continue. He called on all forces standing for Islam to remain united without fear of intimidation.

Charmonai Pir Mufti Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim, who attended as a guest, said a new chapter in Bangladesh’s history could be written if Islamic parties united and contested the next election together.

Other speakers included Khelafat Majlis chief Maulana Abdul Basid Azad, National Citizen Party general secretary Akhtar Hossain, AB Party general secretary Barrister Asaduzzaman Fuad and Bangladesh Nationalist Party central committee religious affairs secretary Rafiqul Islam Jamal.

Speakers said victory in the next parliamentary election could be ensured if Islamic political parties came together. They said the people, along with forces that believed in Islamic values, would decide the country’s direction.

The conference was chaired by Muslihin chief Maulana Khalilur Rahman of Nesarabad and attended by thousands of devout Muslims.
