CUMILLA — Separating religion from politics will lead to barbarism akin to that of Genghis Khan, and no state or society can survive without religious values, Religious Affairs Adviser Dr. A F M Khalid Hossain said Sunday. He made the remarks as chief guest at a conference of imams and khatibs organized by the Shan-e-Sahaba Jatiya Khatib Foundation’s district and metropolitan units at the Cumilla Town Hall ground on the afternoon of November 23.

“We want to integrate politics into the management of society. In our politics, society and diplomacy — everywhere — we want to awaken a religious sentiment,” he said. “If we set religion aside, we could find ourselves in trouble at any moment.”

“Whether in a democracy or a monarchy, if politics and the social order are separated from religion, and if analysis is divorced from religion, then the barbarism of Genghis Khan will prevail,” Khalid Hossain said. He urged those in authority to bring imams, muezzins, khatibs and mosque caretakers under the national pay scale and to provide them with respectable salaries and festival allowances.

Sheikh Mufti Shamim Mazumder, chairman of the Shan-e-Sahaba Jatiya Khatib Foundation; Secretary-General Mufti Sharif Ullah Tareki; and Ashequr Rahman, deputy director of the Islamic Foundation, also spoke at the conference.
