CHATTOGRAM — A 19-year-old Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir leader died after falling from a date palm tree in Chattogram’s Mirsharai upazila, police said. The accident took place around midday Sunday in the Bamansundar area of Katachhara union.

Saifullah Manwar Hossain was the Chhatra Shibir president of Ward 6 of Katachhara union. He was the son of Maulana Nurus Salam, the khatib of the Mijibari Jame Mosque in the Saifullah Joki Uddin area.

Abdul Haque Siraji, acting principal of Sufia Nuria Fazil Madrasa, said Saifullah was a first-year Alim student at the institution. He fell into a pond while climbing a date palm tree, Siraji said. Local residents pulled him out and took him to the upazila health complex, where the on-duty physician declared him dead.

Jahid Hossain, president of Chhatra Shibir’s Mirsharai North unit, told Prothom Alo that Saifullah had been serving as president of the Ward 6 unit in Katachhara union. Saifullah climbed the date palm tree in the afternoon to collect sap and fell into the pond below, Hossain said. His body was recovered an hour later.
