DHAKA — Mirza Galib, a former president of Chhatra Shibir’s Dhaka University unit and now an assistant professor at Howard University in the United States, said mutual respect among people of different faiths should be the guiding principle of any society.

In a post on his verified Facebook account, Galib said that in a society made up of people holding different religious beliefs, showing respect to one another and refraining from publicly derogatory remarks should be the norm. Without that, he said, coexistence breaks down and anarchy takes hold.

Citing the deep reverence people hold for religious belief, scripture and the prophets, Galib wrote that attacking those convictions in an ignorant or crude manner is not free speech but a low form of incivility. He said such conduct should be morally condemned in any civilized society and treated as a punishable offense under the law.
