DHAKA — BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman said his decision to return to Bangladesh is not solely his to make, while expressing a deep yearning for his mother’s love during her current health crisis.

Former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is under the observation of specialist doctors in the coronary care unit. Tarique Rahman, her elder son, made the statement in a Facebook post Saturday morning, Nov. 29.

“Bangladesh’s former prime minister, Deshnetri Begum Khaleda Zia, is in critical and serious condition under intensive hospital care,” Tarique Rahman wrote. “Citizens of all sections of the country, regardless of party or opinion, are sincerely continuing prayers for her recovery. The honorable chief adviser has expressed both prayers for her recovery and a commitment to providing all possible medical support.”

“Medical teams from home and abroad, as always, are continuing to provide the highest professionalism and most sincere service,” he wrote. “Several friendly nations have also expressed their desire to extend advanced medical treatment and all possible cooperation.”

“On behalf of the Zia family, I sincerely thank everyone for the heartfelt prayers and love shown to the universally respected Begum Khaleda Zia and express our deep gratitude,” Tarique Rahman wrote. “At the same time, I earnestly request that everyone continue prayers for Begum Khaleda Zia’s swift recovery.”
