CHATTOGRAM — The family of Wasim Akram, a Chattogram college student killed in the July uprising, welcomed Saturday’s tribunal verdict sentencing Sheikh Hasina to death for crimes against humanity and called for swift execution of the ruling.
Wasim Akram’s father, Shafiul Alam, called on the government to carry out the sentence quickly. “I will be happy the day this verdict is carried out,” he said.
“I was waiting for this verdict since morning,” Alam said. “At last, the tribunal has handed down the verdict we had been looking for. Like all citizens, I am pleased and satisfied.”
“My son went out into the streets to end discrimination,” he said. “So this verdict must be carried out to end discrimination.” He called for the maximum punishment for all identified killers, attackers and those who gave the orders.
“For my son Wasim’s soul to find peace, this verdict must be carried out,” he said. “What good is a verdict if it just sits in court?”
Wasim was killed on July 16, 2024, in the Muradpur area of Chattogram in an attack by Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League supporters and their allies. He was the son of Shafiul Alam of Meheranama in Pekua upazila’s sadar union. He served as joint convener of the Chhatra Dal unit at Chattogram College.
