Prime Minister Tarique Rahman honoured more than a hundred distinguished teachers on World Teachers’ Day, presenting the awards at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka at midday on Monday. Each recipient received Tk 2 lakh and a crest.
The national steering committee finalised 95 teachers from across the country, and six more were selected by the prime minister. Any teacher on the list will later be dropped if adverse comments or information about them emerge, it has been learnt.
Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon chaired the ceremony. The special guests were Md Selim Bhuiyan MP, chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on the education ministry, and Mahdi Amin, adviser to the education ministry and the primary and mass education ministry and spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office. State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj was also present.
This year’s honours went to 10 teachers at primary level, 20 at secondary level, 25 at college level, 20 from general universities, 10 from medical colleges and universities, three from agricultural universities, three from engineering universities, four from science and technology and other specialised universities, and six chosen by the prime minister.
The 10 at primary level comprise eight teachers from general schools and two from madrasas. The 20 at secondary level comprise 10 from general secondary schools, five from technical education and five from madrasas. At college level, 15 teachers from general education, five from technical education and five from madrasas were honoured.
Of the 20 from general universities, 18 teach at public universities and two at private ones. In medical education, five teachers from medical colleges and five from medical universities received the honour.
