An Indian navy sailor has been arrested on charges of passing secret information to a Pakistani woman agent after being lured into an online romance, a so-called honeytrap.
Andhra Pradesh police arrested Pradeep Mukherjee, 31, at a training centre in Coimbatore on Saturday (3 October). A resident of West Bengal, he joined the navy in 2014 and served in the Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam, and was in Coimbatore for a training course.
According to investigators, a Pakistani woman intelligence agent built up contact with him on social media some time ago, and he passed her information about warship movements at the Visakhapatnam naval base and other strategic secrets. Police had kept him under surveillance after noticing suspicious activity before arresting him.
