People in the besieged Gaza Strip are suffering a severe food crisis. According to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), about two-thirds of Gaza’s population face acute food insecurity.

The WFP said falling aid amid the food crisis risked making ordinary people’s hardship worse. About 1.4 million Palestinians are now in acute food crisis.

Food aid rations have also been cut to half of what they were, so families in crisis are receiving less food than they need.

Describing the situation, WFP country director Sean Hughes told the AFP news agency: “People are not safe. There are air strikes every day. People are still being displaced from one place to another.”

“Almost nobody can find a home to live in permanently. The humanitarian situation is extremely dire,” he said.

The WFP said a shortfall in funding meant it had to cut its food assistance by a third, and about 500,000 people in Gaza would lose aid as a result.

Because of the war and displacement, many families already lack food, shelter and other essential services. With aid falling, finding food could become harder still.

Amid the humanitarian crisis, Israel continues to block commercial goods from entering the territory, adding to concern over supplies of food and other essentials.

The WFP says ensuring regular food supplies and humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza is now extremely urgent. Without adequate funding and more essential goods, the food crisis there could deepen.
