Four more children die with measles symptoms

Four more children have died with measles symptoms in Bangladesh in the past 24 hours. In the same period 1,332 children fell ill with symptoms of the disease and measles was confirmed in 96, making 1,428 new child patients in all. By the government’s count, 1,144 children have now died since 15 March. Of them, 104 died of confirmed measles and the other 1,040 with measles symptoms. In all, 223,741 children have fallen ill so far.

The figures were given on Thursday in a press release from the control room of the Directorate General of Health Services.

It said that from 15 March to 8am on 8 October, 201,625 patients with suspected measles symptoms had been found, and 22,116 confirmed measles patients. In this period 178,927 children were admitted to hospital with measles symptoms, and 171,680 were discharged after recovering.

The directorate said two of the four children who died in the past 24 hours were in Sylhet division and one each in Dhaka and Khulna divisions. Dhaka division had the most patients with measles symptoms in the period, 460, and 50 confirmed cases.
