At least 153 people have been killed in a drone strike on a market in Abyei, the disputed border area between Sudan and South Sudan. The strike damaged a fuel depot, setting off a huge fire, the Associated Press news agency reported.

Yohanna Akol Ngor, caretaker information minister of the Abyei administration, said the Sudanese military carried out the attack on Amiet market on Monday. The death toll is feared to rise. South Sudan’s foreign ministry strongly condemned the attack and summoned Sudan’s ambassador.

A senior Sudanese military official, however, claimed that fuel was being smuggled from there to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and that the army had targeted those tankers. He claimed those killed were RSF members.

The international aid group Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said many people with burns and in critical condition had been admitted to the local hospital. Sudan and South Sudan have long disputed ownership of the oil-rich Abyei area. Fighting in the area has intensified as a result of the civil war that began in April 2023.
