College student killed as truck hits motorcycle in Maheshpur

Rion, 22, a second-year honours student of Jashore Government Michael Madhusudan (MM) College, has been killed in a road accident in Maheshpur, Jhenaidah. Nafiz, 18, who was with him, was injured.

The accident happened at about 10:30pm on Tuesday in the Kakiladari area of the upazila.

Rion was the son of Rezaul Islam Montu, a union council member, of Krishnachandrapur village in ward 8 of Fatehpur union in Maheshpur upazila. He was studying in the second year of an honours course at Jashore MM College.

Local sources said Rion and Nafiz were returning home from Kotchandpur by motorcycle on Tuesday night. When they reached the Kakiladari area of Maheshpur upazila, a goods truck coming from behind ran over the motorcycle. Rion was thrown from the bike and crushed under the truck, dying at the scene. Nafiz, the other rider, was injured.

Local people rushed to the spot after hearing of the accident. Police later went to the scene and recovered Rion’s body, which was afterwards handed over to his family.

The death has cast a pall of grief over the area, and relatives and classmates are in mourning.
