Students at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) in Belgium have protested against a rise in tuition fees.
According to a report in the newspaper Le Soir, students blockaded part of the university campus on Thursday in protest at the fee increase.
The blockade began in the morning at the call of a coalition called ‘Gen Z Counter-Attack’, made up of students, student organisations, researchers, teachers and university staff.
Although some campus buildings were blocked, the campus remained open for students to enter. The coalition was protesting against a 43 percent increase in annual tuition fees.
According to the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, the increase will affect 58 percent of students in higher education.
The group also opposes the reform of the ‘Landscape Decree’ (the rules governing higher education), funding cuts to lower levels of education, higher transport costs and police intervention against young people taking part in protests.
The coalition had called for classes at the ULB to be cancelled on Thursday, but the university authorities refused. It has also called on the university to stop outsourcing.
