A court in Noakhali has sentenced Shahadat Hossain to death and fined him Tk 1 lakh for the rape and murder of a 5-year-old girl in Chatkhil upazila. The verdict was delivered Monday morning by Judge Farzana Akter of the Special Children’s Tribunal in Noakhali.
The verdict came after four years of proceedings. The victim’s family received the maximum sentence under the law.
Advocate Shukla Saha, the plaintiff’s lawyer, confirmed the verdict. She said three previous hearing dates had been changed before July 6 was set as the final date for the ruling.
According to case records, the accused is a relative of the victim and a resident of the same village in Chatkhil upazila.
On March 24, 2022, the child went missing from her home. Nine days later, based on information provided by the accused to law enforcement, police recovered the child’s remains from a septic tank behind a house in the area. Shahadat Hossain was then formally arrested.
