The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has raised the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). A 12kg cylinder will now cost Tk 1,837, up Tk 252 from Tk 1,585.
BERC announced the new price on Sunday (4 October), effective from 6pm. It cited higher international prices, shipping charges and the higher price of diesel used by LPG transport vehicles.
The LPG market has been unsettled for the past two weeks, with supply cut back in anticipation of a price rise. Although the September price was set at Tk 1,585, cylinders were reportedly being sold for Tk 2,200 to Tk 2,500.
A report by a state intelligence agency says five companies almost stopped selling from 22 September after seeing world prices rise by $64 a tonne, holding back thousands of tonnes to sell at the new price. It says 158,000 tonnes were imported in August and 156,000 tonnes in September, so there was no reason for a shortage.
