A Jubo Dal leader, Abul Kashem, has been arrested in an attempted rape case in Santhia upazila of Pabna. Police arrested him in Shahjadpur, Sirajganj, early Monday. Kashem is the son of Nizamuddin Sheikh of Aridiadangi village in the Ataikula police station area of Santhia upazila. He was senior vice-president of Jubo Dal for ward 7 of Ar-Ataikula union.
On June 11, a seventh-grade student was allegedly subjected to an attempted rape by Kashem on her way home from school, according to police. The next day, the student’s mother filed a case against Kashem Sheikh at Ataikula police station. In protest and in demand of the accused’s arrest, local people attacked, vandalized and set fire to the accused’s business premises on Sunday.
The party also expelled Kashem over allegations of involvement in antisocial activities. He was expelled on Sunday night through a statement signed by union Jubo Dal president Ektashamul Haque Rajib and general secretary Billal Sardar.
Ataikula police station officer-in-charge Mojibur Rahman said: “We arrested him at dawn from the Shahjadpur area of Sirajganj district. Further legal proceedings in the matter are under way.”
