BEIJING — China on Monday condemned new U.S. sanctions targeting Chinese firms as “illegal” and pledged firm steps to protect the interests of its companies, the country’s Foreign Ministry said.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told reporters in Beijing that China has consistently opposed U.S. unilateral sanctions that flout international law. He called on Washington to halt such “coercive” practices and to stop interfering in other countries’ internal affairs.
The U.S. Treasury Department on Friday, April 24, issued new Iran-related sanctions affecting about 40 entities, including Hengli Petrochemical, one of China’s largest refiners.
Washington said the measures aim to curb Iran’s illicit oil trade and target independent refineries based in eastern China’s Shandong province.
In response, Lin made clear that the United States was abusing its power. The Chinese government is prepared to take any steps necessary to protect the legal rights and interests of its companies, he said.
