An autocrat driven out under pressure from the people has no chance of returning to the country’s politics, state minister for foreign affairs Humayun Kabir said while speaking to journalists on Tuesday.

Sheikh Hasina, who was driven from the country and is staying in India, had no accountability to the people, the state minister said. He alleged that many good initiatives had been held back under the previous government purely out of political vindictiveness. Citing the work of export processing zones as an example, he said Hasina had not taken it forward only because it had been started under the BNP. How could the people want to see someone with such a mean mindset in politics again, he asked.

Every state institution had been destroyed over the past 15 years, and the people had been subjected to extreme oppression and looting, he said. As a result, the angry people finally drove the autocratic ruler out of the country.

Asked about Hasina’s various virtual statements from India, Humayun Kabir said: “Such statements by fugitive criminals are completely worthless and meaningless. In reality, their politics is over. World history shows that those whom the people once kick out have very little chance of returning; practically none.”

On bringing back fugitive accused, he said the governments of the countries where offenders who fled are staying would be informed in accordance with the law so that they can be brought to justice. He also gave assurances that the country is now being run on the right path by patriots and that the government will keep working in the public interest.
